Abercrombie & Finch—time to ditch your CEO!

It isn’t often I decide to go on a little rant, but tonight I’m feeling the urge.  Someone on my Facebook page posted this article in Elite Daily about Abercrombie & Finch’s CEO, Mike Jeffries, and his extremist, prejudice views against overweight people.  He “hates” fat chicks!  He’s “not bothered by excluding fat people,” and considers anyone who is overweight less-than cool—part of the unwanted, undesirable crowd.  Admitting that he has very exclusionary ideals Jeffries said, “A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong.” He continued to criticize other clothing companies who try and embrace all sizes by carrying XL and XXL sizes.  Jeffries declares that “fat chicks will never be a part of the in crowd,” nor does he want overweight women wearing their brands.

This really is an outrage. I think people should boycott this store. If the CEO hates “fat chicks,” what kind of message is this sending to kids today? Whether you have prejudice against a skin color, a gender, a political stance or religious belief, it’s just plain wrong. You know, Hitler had an elitist mindset and spread his beliefs in racial “purity” and in the superiority of the “Germanic race”—what he called an Aryan “master race.” This kind of thinking is dangerous and shouldn’t be supported.

Speaking of Abercrombie & Finch CEO Mike Jeffries: “He doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people,” Lewis said. “He doesn’t want his core customers to see people who aren’t as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they’re one of the ‘cool kids.” – Robin Lewis, The New Rules of Retail

Sugar: The bitter truth

Sugar is Toxic and it’s killing us!

Sugar Is Going to Give You Cancer and a Heart Attack

As you know, everything you eat is bad for you, unless you are eating leafy green vegetables. But, we learn this weekend from The New York Times Magazine‘s Gary Taubes, sugar is extra-bad for you. Like, cigarettes-level bad for you.

Not just high-fructose corn syrup, either: All refined sugar, many doctors are beginning to think, is equally bad. “Toxic,” even. It’s not a universally-accepted argument, but the idea (as put forward by Dr. Robert Lustig in the video above) is that sugar is uniquely bad for the body, increasing levels of liver fat more quickly than any other substance and causing a condition called “insulin resistance” that Tabues calls “the fundamental problem in obesity.” Moreover, insulin resistance is linked to cancer, insofar as the result of the condition—increased production of insulin—”actually promotes tumor growth.”

So! Sugar is (maybe) going to give you diabetes, and cancer, and then a heart attack. And the thing is, Americans consume more sugar, both in refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup, than they ever have before—upwards of 90 pounds per person per year. (Gross.) And probably we will never stop, because sugar tastes great and makes certain people very rich. But if you think you can stop drinking all those Fantas, double hazelnut lattes, and soft drinks, maybe you should.

Tired and sluggish? Find out why

This is a continuum in my life… back on the Alkaline trail.  An excellent article by a medical microbiologist who understands the blood.

OUR BODIES WERE DESIGNED TO BE HEALTHY, slender and energetic. We were intended to have smooth, supple skin and a quick, alert mind. Instead we are overweight – tired and sluggish. WHY?

The New Biology™

Dr. Robert O. Young’s New Biology™, most simply stated, is that the over-acidification of the body is the single underlying cause of all disease.

In contrast, the old biology, based on the work of Louis Pasteur in the late 1800s, stems from the idea that disease comes from germs which invade the body from the outside. Dr. Young has found that when the body is in healthy alkaline balance, germs are unable to get a foothold.

Think of your body as a fish tank.
Think of the importance of maintaining the integrity of the internal fluids of the body that we “swim” in daily.

Imagine the fish in this tank are your cells and organ systems bathed in fluids, which transport food and remove wastes. Now imagine we back up a car and put the tailpipe up against the air intake filter that supplies the oxygen for the water in the tank. The water becomes filled with carbon monoxide, lowering the alkaline pH, creating and acidic pH environment, and threatening the health of the “fish,” your cells and organs.

What if we throw in too much food or the wrong kind of food (acid-producing food like dairy, sugar, and animal protein) and the fish are unable to consume or digest it all, and it starts to decompose and putrefy? Toxic acid waste and chemicals build up as the food breaks down, creating more acidic byproducts, altering the optimum alkaline pH.

Basically, this is a small example of what we may be doing to our internal fluids every day. We are fouling them with pollution, smoking, drugs, excessive intake of food, over-consumption of acid-forming foods, and any number of transgressions which compromise the delicate balance of our internal alkaline fluids.

Some of us have fish tanks (bodies) that are barely able to support life, yet we somehow manage to struggle from day to day, building more sever imbalances until there is the inevitable crash and debilitating chronic, disturbing and disorganizing symptoms to deal with.

The pH level (the acid-alkaline measurement) of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. Extended acid imbalances of any kind are not well tolerated by the body. Indeed, the entire metabolic process depends on a balanced internal alkaline environment. A chronically over-acidic pH corrodes body tissue, slowly eating into the 60,000 miles of veins and arteries like acid eating into marble. If left unchecked, it will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. In summary, over-acidification interferes with life itself leading to all sickness and disease!

How do you know if you’re overly acidic?

Fat is an Acid Problem!

Perhaps one of Dr. Young’s most well known discoveries is his theory of the cause of overweight. He has shown that fat is actually an over-acidification problem. What does that mean? The body creates fat cells to carry acids away from your vital organs, so these acids literally don’t choke your organs to death. Fat is saving your life! Fat is actually a response from the body to an alarming over-acidic condition. The solution? Alkalize and Exercise™ beginning with organic greens products that are loaded with chlorophyll like Doc Broc Power Plants and purified, Ionized Water from one of the systems we sell such as our Jupiter Melody Water Ionizer.

What about Underweight?

At the other end of the health spectrum, the yeast and fungus produced within an overly acidic body can feed on your nutrients and reduce the chemical and mechanical absorption of everything you eat by as much as 50%. This causes many people to become excessively thin, which is no healthier than becoming overweight. Without protein, your body cannot rebuild new tissues or produce enzymes, hormones, or hundreds of other chemical components necessary for cell energy and organ activity. Fatigue, illness, and body weight changes are the results. An underweight person may loose a little more weight as their body chemistry stabilizes. As their body normalizes, they will begin to gain towards their ideal weight. Healthy bodies are not overweight or underweight. A healthy body naturally maintains its own ideal weight. You can begin to restore health, balance, and harmony to your body with … Brand products (Dr. Young’s Balance Pack). As alkalizing and oxygenation begins to take place, the body naturally begins to seek its own ideal weight.

Allergies

The toxins produced within an overly acidic, oxygen deprived body may contribute significantly to what are often called the symptoms of allergy. In addition, the absorption of undigested proteins is a major cause of allergy conditions. The digestive system is weakened, which prevents the total breakdown of amino acids – often causing food allergies. This alone may produce a wide spectrum of severe allergic reactions. Alkalize and Exercise™ beginning with organic greens products that are loaded with chlorophyll like Doc Broc Power Plants and purified, Ionized Water from one of the systems we sell such as our Jupiter Melody Water Ionizer. These products introduce oxygenating and alkalizing elements into your body – helping to balance the conditions that may lead to hypersensitivities.

Fatigue

Fatigue is probably the major symptom or complaint of an overly acidic body. The toxins produced in an acidic body environment reduce the absorption of protein and minerals, which in turn weakens the body’s ability to produce enzymes and hormones. This also interferes with the reconstruction of cells and other necessary components of energy production. The result is fatigue, poor endurance, an inability to add muscle tone, and general weakness. Alkalize and Exercise™ beginning with organic greens products that are loaded with chlorophyll like Doc Broc Power Plants and purified, Ionized Water from one of the systems we sell such as our Jupiter Melody Water Ionizer.

Doc Broc Power Plants is formulated to bring you vital nutrient elements and easily digested protein. This alkalizing, energizing, and nourishing formula begins oxygenating your body.
Alkaline Water
The most important thing you must learn is to hydrate the body with alkalizing water. Like the earth on which we live, our bodies are 70% water. Food cravings are often the body’s cry for water. A thirst for water will begin as one begins to hydrate with water.

A diet high in acid foods such as meat, dairy grains, high sugar fruits and bread, causes acid wastes to build up in the body. When acid wastes enter our blood stream, the blood system will attempt to dispose of these wastes in liquid form through the lungs or the kidneys. If there are too many wastes to handle, they are deposited in various organ systems like the heart, pancreas, liver, colon, and other locations.

The breakdown of this disposal process of acid waste could also be called “the aging process”. To slow down and reverse this process, one must begin by removing this over-acidification of the blood and tissues by including liberal amounts of alkaline water in the diet. Alkaline water has a pH between 9 and 11, and will neutralize harmful stored acid wastes and gently remove them from the tissues.

Are You Getting Enough Alkaline Foods in Your Diet?

‘Your health depends on an alkaline environment, created by eating foods such as tomatoes, avocados and green vegetables…striking the optimum 80/20 balance and regulating your body’s acid/alkaline chemistry through simple changes in diet can result in weight loss, increased stamina and strength,a stronger immune system and a greater sense of wellbeing.’ Dr. Robert and Shelley Young

How did we become so out of balance?

After years of societal changes, millions of dollars of marketing spend and technological advances we, as a race, are now facing more dietary based health challenges than ever before. It is no coincidence that the rapidly growing numbers of cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes correlate almost exactly with the rise in consumption of acid forming foods such as sugars, saturated fats, and white breads. At the same time our consumption of fresh vegetables and essential fatty acids has decreased dramatically, making way for convenience and a generation hooked on sugary treats.

Becoming Alkaline

This is not as difficult or as technical as it sounds. When we talk about eating alkaline foods or starting an alkaline diet we are referring to consuming those foods and drink which have an alkaline effect on the body. This effect is based upon the ash residue that remains after our foods are consumed. Some foods leave an acid ash, whereas others leave an alkaline ash. Conveniently for us, our bodies have been designed to categorize which foods leave which kind of ash into neat and easy to remember groups.

Of course, everybody is different – but most of us should aim to eat 75-80% alkaline foods and a maximum of 20-25% acid forming foods.

Please stop killing us: Food and medical controversies

PLEASE STOP KILLING US!

I have wondered about the American diet for many years now, even though I have not always adhered to what I believed in my heart was the best way to eat for optimum health. The consequences of choice are often times “AWAKENING!” So, how is it that America, which has some of the so-called finest medical technology in the world is one of the top-ranked countries for obesity (children and adult), diabetes, cancer, and heart disease; to name a few? Worse still, why aren’t our medical professionals addressing not just the symptoms but taking radical stands to not only treat but cure and prevent this unhealthy continuum? I don’t even want to get into the consumer-driven corporations who continue to feed this country addictive chemicals, which are nothing short of slow killing poison! Then there is there are the federal agencies that work together to maintain a “standard” for so-called optimum health (NOT). It’s a vicious circle, and instead of this nation becoming healthier, we are being lulled into a delusion of well-being. That’s right, we are over-fed and under-nourished! If films like, “Super-Size Me,” and “Fast Food Nation” didn’t shine the light on some of the wide-spread deception in America, then perhaps Dr. Robert Young’s interview on CNN will shed some light:

Bottom line, the American diet is a guarantee for sickness, and since traditional medicine is not properly addressing things like acid/alkaline and the importance of pH balance in the body, and basically treating symptoms, it might be time to revamp our thinking.

Symptoms & Diseases Confused

In this very revealing and thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Young helps us to to take a clear-eyed look at how illogical current medical thinking is about diagnosis of symptoms, naming diseases, and then prescribing drug treatments. If you want to know the real CAUSE of some common dis-ease conditions, read on!

“Disease or should we say Dis-ease names like cancer,
diabetes and osteoporosis are misleading and misinform
patients about dis-ease prevention.

There is a curious tendency in conventional medicine
to name a set of symptoms a disease. I was recently
at a compounding pharmacy having my bone mineral
density measured to update my health stats. I
spotted a poster touting a new drug for osteoporosis.
It was written by a drug company and it said
exactly this: ‘Osteoporosis is a disease that causes
weak and fragile bones.’ Then, the poster went on to
say that you need a particular drug to counteract this ‘disease.’

Yet the language is all backwards. Osteoporosis isn’t
a disease that causes weak bones, osteoporosis is
the name given to a diagnosis of weak bones. In other
words, the weak bones are the result of excess acidity,
and then the diagnosis of osteoporosis followed.

The drug poster makes it sound like osteoporosis
strikes first, and then you get weak bones. The
cause and effect is all backwards. And that’s
how drug companies want people to think about
diseases and symptoms: first you ‘get’ the dis-ease,
and then you are ‘diagnosed’ just in time to take
a new drug for the rest of your life.

But it’s all an illuision. There is no such
disease as osteoporosis. It’s just a made-up name
given to a pattern of symptoms that indicates
you are over-acid which causes your bones to
become fragile.

As another example, when a person follows an
unhealthy lifestyle that results in a symptom
such as high blood pressure, that symptom is
actually being assumed to be a disease all by
itself and it will be given a disease name.
What disease? The dis-ease is, of course,
‘hypertension’ or ‘high blood pressure.’
Doctors throw this phrase around as if it
were an actual dis-ease and not merely
descriptive of patient physiology.

This may all seem silly, right? But there’s
actually a very important point to all this.

When we look at symptoms and give them disease
names, we automatically distort the selection
of available treatments for such a dis-ease.
If the dis-ease is, by itself, hypercholesterolemia
or high cholesterol, then the cure for the dis-ease
must be nothing other than lowering the high
cholesterol. And that’s how we end up with all
these pharmaceuticals treating high cholesterol
in order to ‘prevent’ this dis-ease and lower
the levels of LDL cholesterol in the human patient.

By lowering only the cholesterol, the doctor can
rest assured that he is, in fact, treating this
‘disease,’ since the definition of this ‘disease’
is hypercholesterolemia or high cholesterol and
nothing else.

But there is a fatal flaw in this approach to
disease treatment: the symptom is not the cause
of the dis-ease. There is another cause, and
this deeper cause is routinely ignored by
conventional medicine, doctors, drug companies,
and even patients.

Let’s take a closer look at hypertension or
high blood pressure. What actually causes high
blood pressure? Many doctors would say high
blood pressure is caused by a specific, measurable
interaction between circulating chemicals in the
human body. Thus, the ill-behaved chemical
compounds are the cause of the high blood pressure,
and therefore the solution is to regulate these
chemicals. That’s exactly what pharmaceuticals
do — they attempt to manipulate the chemicals
in the body to adjust the symptoms of high blood
pressure. Thus, they only treat the symptoms,
not the root cause.

Or take a look at high cholesterol. The conventional
medicine approach says that high cholesterol is
caused by a chemical imbalance in the liver, which
is the organ that produces cholesterol. Thus the
treatment for high cholesterol is a prescription
drug that inhibits the liver’s production of
cholesterol (statin drugs). Upon taking these
drugs, the high cholesterol (the ‘disease’)
is regulated, but what was causing the liver to
overproduce cholesterol in the first place?
That causative factor remains ignored.

The root cause of high cholesterol, as it turns
out, is primarily an over acidic lifestyle and
diet. A person lives an acidic life or who eats
foods that are acidic will inevitably cause the
body to go into preservation mode and produce more
cholesterol to neutralize the excess acid thus
showing the symptoms of this so-called dis-ease
of high cholesterol. Its simple cause and effect.
Eat the wrong foods and don’t exercise, and you’ll
produce too much acid which will cause the body to
release cholesterol from the liver to bind up
that acid which can be detected and diagnosed by
conventional medical procedures. You see it is
not the cholesterol that is bad it is the acid
producing food we eat and the lack of exercise
that is bad. Reduce the acid producing foods
like beef, chicken, pork, dairy, coffee, tea,
soda pops, etc., and start exercising every day
and you will reduce the protective cholesterol
that is saving your life from acids that are
not being elimnated from an acidic lifestyle
and diet.

Yet the root cause of all this is actually poor
lifestyle and food choice, not some bizarre
behavior by the liver. If the disease were to
be accurately named, then, it would be called
Acidic Lifestyle and Food Choice Dis-Ease, or
simply ALFCD.

ALFCD would be a far more accurate name that
would make sense to people. If it’s an acidic
lifestyle and foods choice dis-ease, then it
seems that the obvious solution to the dis-ease
would be to choose a lifestyle and foods that
aren’t so acidic. Of course that may be a bit
of simplification since you have to distinguish
between healthy alkaline lifestyles and foods
and unhealthy acidic lifestyle and foods. But
at least the name ALFCD gives clients or patients
a better idea of what’s actually going on rather
than naming the dis-ease after a symptom, such
as high cholesterol. You see, the symptom is not
the dis-ease, but conventional medicine insists
on calling the symptom the dis-ease because that
way it can treat the symptom and claim success
without actually addressing the underlying cause,
which remains a mystery to modern medicine.

But let’s move on to some other dis-eases so you
get a clearer picture of how this actually works.
Another dis-ease that’s caused by poor lifestyle
and acidic food choice is diabetes. Type 2
diabetes is the natural physiological and metabolic
result of a person consuming refined carbohydrates
and added sugars in large quantities, undigested
proteins from beef, chicken, and pork without
engaging in regular physical exercise that would
compensate for such dietary practices.

The name ‘diabetes’ is meaningless to the average
person. The disease should be called Excessive Acid
Dis-Ease, or EAD. If it were called Excessive Acid
Dis-ease, the solution to it would be rather apparent;
simply eat less sugar, eliminate all animal proteins,
eggs, dairy, drink fewer soft drinks, exercise and so
on. But of course that would be far too simple for
the medical community, so the dis-ease must be given
a complex name such as diabetes that puts its
solution out of reach of the average patient.

Another dis-ease that is named after its symptom
is cancer. In fact, to this day, most doctors and
many patients still believe that cancer is a physical
thing: a tumor. In reality, a tumor is the solution
of cancer, not its cause. A tumor is simply a
physical manifestation of bound up acidic cells
so they do not spoil other healthy cells. The
tumor is the solution to cells damaged by acids
not the problem. The truth is cancer is not a
cell but an acidic liquid. When a person ‘has
cancer,’ what they really have is cancerous tissues
or latent tissue acidosis. They are absorbing
their own acidic urine. It would be a far better
named for the dis-ease: Cancerous Tisssue Dis-Ease(CTD)
or Latent Tissue Acidosis or LTA.

If cancer were actually called Latent Tissue Acidosis,
it would seem ridiculous to try to cure cancer by
cutting out tumors through surgery and by destroying
the immune system with chemotherapy. And yet these
are precisely the most popular treatments for cancer
offered by conventional medicine. These treatments
do absolutely nothing to support the patient’s
immune system and prevent the build up of acids
in the tissues. That’s exactly why most people who
undergo chemotherapy or the removal of tumors through
surgical procedures end up with yet more cancer a few
months or a few years later. It’s also another reason
why survival rates of cancer have barely budged over
the last twenty years. (In other words, conventional
medicine’s treatments for cancer simply don’t work.)
The main reason is current medical science wrongly
perceives cancer as a cell when in reality cancer
is an acidic liquid, like lactic acid.

This whole situation stems from the fact that the
dis-ease is misnamed. It isn’t cancer, it isn’t a
tumor and it certainly isn’t a dis-ease caused by
having too strong of an immune system that needs
to be destroyed through chemotherapy. It is simply
latent tissue acidosis. And if it were called
latent tissue acidosis dis-ease or urine in the
tissues dis-ease, the effective treatment for
cancer would be apparent.

The kidneys are responsible for eliminating acids
out of the blood and recycling alkalinity back into
the blood. When we have an over-acidic lifestyle
and diet this puts stress on the kidneys which
can cause them to breakdown. The result is kidney
dis-ease caused by circulatory acids. If acids
are not eliminated out of the blood they will
then be thrown out into the tissues leading to
latent tissue acidosis and eventual cancerous
tissue. Medical science uses dialysis to purify
the blood from acidity and prevent latent tissue
acidosis. If one will stop their acidic lifestyle
and diet and begin to alkalize the blood and
tissues this will support the kidneys and
prevent kidney disease and the need for
dialysis.

There are many other dis-eases that are given
misleading names by western medicine. But if you
look around the world and take a look at how
dis-eases are named elsewhere, you will find
many countries have dis-ease names that actually
make sense.

For example, in Chinese medicine, Alzheimer’s
dis-ease is given a name that means, when
translated, ‘feeble mind disease.’ In Chinese
medicine, the name of the dis-ease more accurately
describes the actual cause of the dis-ease which
is caused by acids or urine on the brain, whereas
in western medicine, the name of the dis-ease
seems to be intended to obscure the root cause
of the dis-ease, thereby making all dis-eases
sound far more complex and mysterious than they
really are.

This is one way in which doctors and practitioners
of western medicine keep medical treatments out
of the reach of the average citizen. Because,
by God, they sure don’t want people thinking for
themselves about the causes of dis-ease!

By creating a whole new vocabulary for medical
conditions, they can speak their own secret
language and make sure that people who aren’t
schooled in medicine don’t understand what
they’re saying. That’s a shame, because the
treatments and cures for virtually all chronic
dis-eases are actually quite simple and can be
described in plain language, such as making
different alkaline food choices, getting more
natural sunlight, drinking more alkaline water,
engaging in regular physical exercise, avoiding
specific acidic foods, supplementing our diet
with green foods and green drinks and alkalizing
nutritional supplements and so on.

See, western medicine prefers to describe
dis-eases in terms of chemistry. When you’re
depressed, you aren’t suffering from a lack of
natural sunlight; you are suffering from a ‘brain
chemistry imbalance’ that can only be regulated,
they claim, by ingesting toxic chemicals to alter
your brain chemistry. When your bones are brittle,
it’s not acidic brittle bones dis-ease; it’s
called osteoporosis, something that sounds very
technical and complicated. And to treat it, western
doctors and physicians will give you prescriptions
for expensive drugs that somehow claim to make
your bones less brittle. But in fact, the real
treatment for this can be described in plain
language once again: regular physical exercise,
vitamin D supplementation, mineral supplements
that include calcium and strontium, natural sunlight,
and avoidance of acidic foods such as soft drinks,
white flour and added sugars.

In fact, virtually every dis-ease that’s prominent
in modern society — diabetes, cancer, heart
disease, osteoporosis, clinical depression,
irritable bowel syndrome and so on — can be
easily described in plain language without
using complex terms at all. These dis-eases
are simply misnamed. And I believe that they
are intentionally misnamed to put the jargon
out of reach of everyday citizens. As a result,
there’s a great deal of arrogance in the language
of western medicine, and this arrogance furthers
the language of separation. Separation never
results in healing. In order to effect healing,
we must bring together the language of healers
and patients using plain language that real people
understand and that real people can act upon.

We need to start describing dis-eases in terms
of their root causes, not in terms of their arcane,
biochemical actions. When someone suffers from
seasonal affective disorder or clinical depression,
for example, let’s call it what it is: Sunlight
Deficiency Disorder. To treat it, the person simply
needs to get more sunlight. This isn’t rocket science,
it’s not complex, and it doesn’t require a
prescription.

If someone is suffering from osteoporosis, let’s
get realistic about the words we use to describe
the condition: it’s really Acidic Bones Dis-ease.
And it should be treated with things that will
enhance bone density, such as nutrition, physical
exercise and avoidance of acidic foods and drinks
that strip away bone mass from the human body to
neutralize the excess acids in the blood and
tissues.

All of this information, of course, is rather
shocking to old-school doctors and practitioners
of western medicine, and the bigger their egos
are, the more they hate the idea of naming dis-eases
in plain language that patients can actually
comprehend. That’s because if the simple truths
about dis-eases and their causes were known,
health would be more readily available to everyday
people, and that would lessen the importance of
physicians and medical researchers.

There’s a great deal of ego invested in the medical
community, and they sure don’t want to make sound
health attainable to the average person without
their expert advice. Many Doctors want to serve
as the translators of ‘truth’ and will balk at
any attempts to educate the public to either practice
medicine on their own.

But in reality, health (and a connection with
spirit) is attainable by every single person.
Health is easy, it is straightforward, it is direct
and, for the most part, it is available free of
charge. A personal connection with our Creator is
the same if we ask humbly in prayer for a
relationship with Him, and guidance.

Don’t believe the names of dis-eases given to you
by your doctor. Those names are designed to obscure,
not to inform. They are designed to separate you
from self-healing, not to put you in touch with your
own inner healer. And thus, they are nothing more
than bad medicine masquerading as modern medical
practice.”

The obesity epidemic: Carbs are not the only issue

Finally, here is a medical researcher who warns that carbohydrates are behind the obesity epidemic. Worse than most carbs, Ray Lustig of the University of California at San Francisco says that fructose, because of the insulin response it generates, is the metabolic equivalent of poison.

An obesity expert who has worked extensively with children, Lustic says too much insulin triggered by fructose consumption (that’s right, the fructose you get from drinking orange juice) interferes with the hormone leptin, which normally tells our brain when we’ve had enough to eat.

Obesity is not the result of gluttony or lack of exercise, as the low-fat mafia would have you believe. Research by experts such as Lustig challenges federal dietary guidelines that recommend more consumption of carbohydrates, rather than proteins and fats, or that feeding kids lots of fruits is healthy. But if you must eat fruit, eat whole fruit, not juice, for the fiber it contains. Drinking a glass of juice is far worse than any fat you might eat.

Read the article”

The rise of obesity is usually blamed on too much eating and not enough exercising, but Robert Lustig, MD, a UCSF pediatric neuroendocrinologist, asks us to look beyond the obvious.

Yes, more Americans are overweight today than 30 years ago. Kids are still getting heavier, compared with prior generations of kids. That leads some UCSF researchers to warn that heart disease and other health problems will grow in future decades.

Reassessing our health: More programs, more vaccines and obesity on the rise!

With so much focus on health and healthier food products over the last 10 years, I found this AP article noteworthy. Seems we are not much healthier, and obesity is on the rise, but health officials are busy developing more programs to promote wellness. This of course is nothing new… Government health officials reassess things ever 10 years, and so far, it appears there is not much improvement.

Associated Press
Did Americans get any healthier over past decade?

By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer

Thursday, December 31, 2009

(12-31) 10:52 PST ATLANTA (AP) —

About 10 years ago the government set some lofty health goals for the nation to reach by 2010.
More News

So how did we do? By many measures, not so hot. There are more obese Americans than a decade ago, not fewer. We eat more salt and fat, not less. More of us have high blood pressure. More of our children have untreated tooth decay.

But the nation has made at least some progress on many other goals. Vaccination rates improved. Most workplace injuries are down. And deaths rates from stroke, cancer and heart disease are all dropping.

As we move into a new decade, the government is analyzing how well the nation met the 2010 goals and drawing up a new set of goals for 2020 expected to be more numerous and — perhaps — less ambitious.

“We need to strike a balance of setting targets that are achievable and also ask the country to reach,” said Dr. Howard Koh, the federal health official who oversees the Healthy People project. “That’s a balance that’s sometimes a challenge to strike.”

The Healthy People objectives were first created in the late 1970s to set an agenda for getting Americans to live longer, healthier lives. It was also an attempt to involve the public and emphasize that many health problems are preventable.

Every 10 years, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reassesses the goals, and reports on progress made in the previous decade.

Many call the effort a success. The report has been imitated by states and other nations. Because of its importance within public health circles, interest groups jockey to add their goals to the document, which is expanding to more than 1,000 targets. And health agency workers have Healthy People goals memorized.

“It is something that we think about all the time,” said Dr. Lance Rodewald, a vaccination expert at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But after more than 30 years, the goals aren’t well known to the public and only a modest number have been met.

About 41 percent of the 1990 measurable goals were achieved. For the 2000 goals, it was just 24 percent.

As for the 2010 goals, data is still being collected, and a final report is not due out until 2011. But it looks like the results will be in the neighborhood of 20 percent, according to a preliminary analysis by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

The CDC analysis done this fall found that just 18 percent of those goals have been met so far. Worse, the nation actually retreated from about 23 percent of the goals.

One example: Healthy People 2010 called for the percentage of adults who are obese to drop to 15 percent. That goal was set at a time when nearly a quarter of all adults were obese. Now, about 34 percent of adults are obese, according to the latest federal statistics.

_An estimated 28 percent of adults had high blood pressure in 2000. The goal was to reduce that to 16 percent. But the most recent government data say the proportion has risen to 29 percent.

_About 16 percent of young children had untreated tooth decay in 2000. The target was 9 percent. The latest statistic is about 20 percent.

_The proportion of births by cesarean section increased despite a 2010 goal of lowering them, and the percentage of infants born very small and fragile also increased.

The nation has had better luck raising childhood vaccination rates, lowering cancer death rates, increasing smoking laws and reducing most types of work injuries.

To many health officials, simply making progress is a victory. An analysis of 635 of the nearly 1,000 targets for the past decade shows only 117 goals have been met. But progress was made toward another 332. In other words, there was improvement in 70 percent of the measures.

“That’s evidence of a healthier nation,” Koh said.

The Healthy People effort could be better if it included more information about how to reach the goals, and how much it would cost, said David Holtgrave, a health policy expert at Johns Hopkins University.

The program lays out the goals, but looks to others — and the public — to find ways to achieve them. Healthy People does not provide funding to meet the goals, either.

“It’s all carrot and no stick,” said Dr. Richard Riegelman, founding dean of the George Washington University School of Public Health, who has been part of the Healthy People planning.

Right now, health officials are developing goals for 2020. The details are far from settled, but an advisory panel of experts has recommended that the new goals be more realistic. They also hope to make it more inviting to the public.

In the past, Healthy People reports have been released as a book the size of a James Michener epic.

“They have a lot of good information. They can also give you a backache,” said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health who heads a committee working on the new goals.

He and others are pushing for Healthy People 2020 to be an online document that links to Web sites and sources for nutrition and exercise advice and other ways people can improve their own health.

“We want to make 2020 a blueprint everyone can rally behind,” Fielding said.
